
How to Set Up a Home Wi-Fi Guest Network, and Why You Should

Nearly every router sold in the past several years ships with a guest network option, and nearly nobody turns it on — usually because no one explains what it protects against until after something's already gone wrong on the main network.
What a guest network does
A guest network is a second Wi-Fi name broadcast from the same router, but isolated from your main network at the traffic level. Devices connected to the guest network can reach the internet, but generally can't see or access devices on your main network — your laptop with shared files, your smart TV, a network-attached storage drive, or a printer. Without this separation, anyone on your main Wi-Fi, including guests and some IoT devices, is technically on the same local network as everything else you own.
Why it's worth setting up
Three specific risks a guest network closes off, roughly in the order they tend to matter.
Visitors don't need access to your devices
When friends or relatives visit and ask for the Wi-Fi password, giving them your main password gives their phone the same network-level access as your own devices. A guest network gives them internet without that.

Where to put smart home devices
If your router allows more than one guest or secondary network, a dedicated network for IoT devices (smart plugs, bulbs, cameras) separate from both your main network and the visitor guest network is the more thorough setup, since it keeps visitor devices and your smart home devices from being able to interact with each other too. Not every router supports three separate networks, so if you have to choose, prioritise separating IoT devices over separating guests, since IoT devices are on your network continuously and represent the larger ongoing exposure.
What Happens If You Skip the Isolation Setting
Simply creating a second network name without turning off local network access defeats most of the purpose. Guest devices can still see and potentially interact with your main devices over the shared local network — the separate name alone doesn't create the isolation, the specific setting does. This is the step people miss most often, because the guest network still "works" for internet access even with isolation off. That gives a false sense it's set up correctly when the actual security benefit isn't active at all.
The setting itself goes by different names depending on the router: "AP Isolation," "Guest Network Isolation," or "Allow guest network access to local network" (which needs to be switched OFF, not on) are the most common labels. Bandwidth Limiting Prevents a Specific Annoyance
Without a bandwidth cap, a single guest device downloading something large, or a smart camera continuously streaming video, can noticeably slow your main network's speed even though it's technically a separate network name. Both still share the same underlying internet connection, and often the same router hardware. Most routers that support guest networks also let you cap the guest network's maximum speed — worth setting conservatively unless you need guests to have full-speed access.
Router Age Affects How Well This Actually Works
Very old or budget routers sometimes implement guest networks poorly, either not fully isolating traffic despite the setting being enabled, or requiring a firmware update to fix known bugs in the feature. If you've enabled isolation and still see guest devices appearing in your main network's device list, check for a firmware update, or test isolation directly by trying to access a shared folder from a guest-connected device — don't just assume the setting is working as intended.
Extending This to a Full IoT Network, If You Have Many Smart Devices
Once you own more than a handful of smart home devices, a separate third network, distinct from both the guest network and your main one, keeps a single compromised smart bulb or camera from having a path to your laptop — and also keeps it from having a path to a visitor's device on the guest network. That matters more than it might seem, because IoT devices are the category most likely to have known, unpatched vulnerabilities sitting on your network indefinitely.
A Password Habit Worth Adopting Alongside This
Rotate the guest network password every few months, not because it's likely been stolen, but because it costs nothing and closes off access for anyone who was given it once and long since stopped needing it, an old contractor, a friend who visited months ago and never asked again.
What to Tell Guests So They Actually Use It
Simply having a guest network configured doesn't help if visitors default to asking for "the Wi-Fi password" and get handed the main one out of habit. Writing the guest network name and password on a small card near the router, or saving it as a quick-share QR code most routers can generate, makes it the path of least resistance for a guest instead of requiring you to remember to offer it every single time someone new visits.
Checking Whether Your ISP-Provided Router Even Supports This
Some ISP-supplied routers, particularly older rental units, have a stripped-down admin interface that lacks a proper guest network feature entirely, even though the underlying hardware might technically support it. In that case, a separate, inexpensive router run purely as an access point in guest mode, or asking the ISP directly whether a firmware update unlocks the feature, are both worth checking before assuming the setup simply isn't possible on your equipment.
Setting an Auto-Expiring Guest Password for a One-Time Visitor
Some newer routers support a time-limited guest credential that expires automatically after a set number of hours, ideal for a single visit where you'd rather not remember to manually disable access afterward. Checking your router's admin panel for this specific feature saves the follow-up step of going back in later to revoke access.
What to Do If You're Renting and Don't Control the Router
Renters using a landlord-provided router sometimes don't have admin access to configure a guest network at all. In that case, a personal travel router, a small, inexpensive device that creates its own separate network off the existing connection, achieves a similar isolation effect without needing access to the main router's settings.
A quick check-up
Set it up once and then check on it occasionally: open the admin panel, glance at the guest network's connected-devices list, and if something unfamiliar is still there weeks after a visitor left, changing the guest password shuts it out immediately — which is the entire point of keeping it separate in the first place.
